As an institution that is thousands of years old, the beer industry generally has the reputation of being a male domain. For centuries, brewing was purely a men’s business and beer consumption was also attributed to the male parts of society. But times are changing and things are also happening in die-hard men’s areas.
The craft beer movement has brought a breath of fresh air and some changes to the beer world. Encrusted structures were broken open, the dust of the decades knocked off and a new era began. But not for everyone. The fact that women are still a small minority in the beer business is scandalous, but by no means the most terrifying thing about this story. When Mariana Schneider started her movement in 2020, she actually wanted to found an association in which women, PoC and people who associate themselves with LGBTQIA + can exchange ideas. She wanted to generate a safe space within the beer industry and found a community that brews together, stands up for one another and shares knowledge with one another. GLOW met all of these criteria, but the Global Ladies of Wort movement also set off a whole avalanche: Countless people contacted Mariana and reported on discrimination, violence, sexual harassment and other absurdities in the brewing and beer industry in general. GLOW caused a sensation in the scene and countless well-known breweries were and are being pilloried.
We applaud these courageous people and their courageous commitment to equal rights for all. The Berliner Weisse Brauerei Schneeeule is also involved and has contributed a beer that tastefully pays homage to the movement: Mariana GLOW is an act of rebellion with a wonderful aroma.
