The Aufsesser beer comes from a brewery that was already known by many names. Before the Rothenbach family decided to simply name the brewery after their hometown, the brewery with the adjoining inn was called “Zur Sonne”, “Sonnenhof” and “Sunäu”. Today the brewery is simply called Aufsesser Brewery, the associated inn is called Brauereigasthof Rothenbach.
In contrast to the naming process, founding the brewery was not at all complicated. The history of the Rothenbach family goes back to Jean Rothenbach, who in 1823 bought a plot of land with the well-sounding name "Wirtsgütlein". This idyllic piece of earth was passed on from father to son until it finally belonged to Jean's grandson Johann Rothenbach, who built a brewery on it. After the resourceful Johann bought his brewery equipment from a neighboring Franciscan monastery, he was able to convince one of the monks to help him with the brewing too. With the active support of the monk, he succeeded in brewing the first beer in November 1886. He poured out the creation in his own inn and soon had to go back to the brewhouse to get supplies. The Aufsesser brewery was born and from then on could pamper the region with delicious beer. The success of the Rothenbach family did not diminish in the following war years either: the brewery survived both world wars and began receiving holidaymakers in the summer months in the 1950s.
Today the sixth generation of the Rothenbach family is in charge and has successfully brought the brewery into the modern age. Gradually the buildings were renovated and expanded, modernized and refurbished. With the values and tradition of their Franconian homeland in view, the Rothenbachs celebrate lively beer culture and protect this valuable asset with the art of brewing and craftsmanship. The creations of the family brewery can be found all over the world: The Rothenbachs are represented with their beers at trade fairs, markets and in international competitions. Your efforts are rewarded with great success and the beers have already won one or two prestigious awards. The Franconian beers delight gourmets from near and far and can also be enjoyed with a clear conscience. The Rothenbach family not only attaches great importance to excellent taste, but also to environmental protection and the preservation of their Franconian homeland. The brewery constantly strives to improve its CO2 balance and draws its electricity from its own photovoltaic system as well as from other regenerative energy sources.
