In addition to beautiful nature, idyllic landscapes and a few wild moose, the Canadian maritime province of New Brunswick also offers something for thirsty hikers, cyclists and canoeists: the traditional brewery Moosehead Breweries Limited is at home in Saint John and brews the finest beer there for hard-working day trippers and everyone else.
Moosehead Breweries' roots go back to the 19th century. In 1867, Susannah Oland brewed the first beer on her family farm. Their October Brown Ale sold like hot cakes and saw the one-woman operation grow into a successful craft brewery. Today, Susannah's descendants are the sixth generation at the helm of the company and are still successfully brewing their beer. Four members of the family run the brewery together, carrying on the legacy of their ancestors with pride and dedication. Moosehead is Canada's oldest privately owned brewery and one of the last major breweries still owned by Canadians. The passion of the Oland family has kept the company alive for centuries and carried the team through difficult times. The brewery survived devastating fires, two world wars, tough competition and Prohibition without any catastrophic losses. On the contrary, the obstacles that were overcome made it what it is today - an institution for Canadian brewing tradition and a home of handcrafted, tasty beer specialties.
Moosehead Breweries Limited is now in its sixth generation and the seventh generation is already in the starting blocks: in order to continue the family tradition, the youngsters learn the craft and the secrets of good beer. The brews owe their unmistakable taste and character to the men and women behind the kettles, who produce the finest creations using family recipes passed down through the centuries. The product range of the traditional brewery includes classics such as the Canadian lager and modern beer specialties such as the fruity, aromatic beer mix drinks from the Shaker series . The brewery satisfies every taste and boldly steps into the future with young, fresh ideas, the latest technology and hand-picked raw materials. The heraldic animal of the brewery is of course the moose that gives it its name: the deer with the majestic antlers is at home in the deep forests of Canada and stands for the values of adaptability, strength and movement. Especially in the less densely populated regions of Canada and North America, moose played an important role in people's diet in the past.
