In addition to an abundance of professional brewers who have their own breweries or labels, there are a number of extremely competent hobby brewers in Germany. They brew beer in small numbers on private brewing systems, some of which are cobbled together from household appliances, and supply friends and relatives with it. Once a year, however, these hidden brewing talents are in the limelight: the rookies can put their skills to the test at the German championship of hobby brewers. The showdown between the beer-mad occasional brewers not only gives them fame and honor, but also, in the best case, good connections to full-time brewers.

Nikki Parks and Nils Lichtenberg from Aachen had a good hand and were able to convince with their masterful Hopfen-Weisse. Not only did they win the championship, they also wowed the brewers at the Störtebeker brewery with their creation.

Now the finely hopped wheat beer is brewed in a limited edition at the Störtebeker Brauquartier and the winners of the German championship of amateur brewers enjoy the nationwide attention and a valuable insight into the day-to-day business of established breweries. Their top-fermented Weizenbock brings a whopping 7.3% alcohol content into the glass and scores with a wonderfully soft mouthfeel and full-bodied body. The hop varieties Nugget, Mosaic, Simcoe and Cascade complement the composition of caramel and grain with strong fruit notes and a complementary bitterness.
