The spelled has an eventful history behind it. For a while, the grain was valued for its good taste and versatility, but the somewhat more complex cultivation of spelled has caused it to be forgotten. In the Renaissance, grain was rediscovered for a short time, only to then disappear again. Today it’s back in fashion: spelled is a popular alternative to wheat and is used for bread, pastries, pasta and all sorts of other purposes, you can even make coffee out of it.
The Veldensteiner brewery also uses the grain, but not for its coffee. The brewers use it to make a wonderful beer based on an old recipe that has been handed down. Their historic spelled beer is a naturally cloudy specialty in cloudy gold. The noble drop brings 5.6% alcohol content and an aromatic bouquet of barley and spelled malt, hops and yeast into the glass. A malty scent rises from the creamy foam, bringing notes of light grain and honey to the nose. The initial sip reveals a sparkling beer with a subtle hop bitterness. The balanced malt notes are accompanied by a light fruitiness and hints of roasted nuts.
If you would like to discover another side of spelled, we recommend Veldensteiner’s historic spelled beer! A hearty pleasure.
