Even if the India Pale Ale has blossomed into an absolute classic of the craft beer industry, this interpretation by Nøgne Ø is by no means basic: The 7.5% strong ale is brewed from the finest, hand-picked raw materials and is made for you throw it off the stool with its whopping 60 bitter units. In the most positive sense.
Craft brewers usually focus on selecting the most aroma-intensive hops, but the bright minds at Nøgne Ø also keep an eye on the other ingredients. The malt in particular: the brewers’ absolute favorite variety is Maris Otter. The British barley variety is one of the most popular varieties thanks to its full-bodied aroma and costs a little more than other grains. In addition to the hand-picked malt, the brewers use three other types that give the beer a velvety-soft mouthfeel and its strong body. The two hop varieties Chinook and Cascade are responsible for the crisp bitterness and the cornucopia of fruity aromas.
Nøgne Øs India Pale Ale is dark gold and has a scent that is hard to resist: a wonderful smell of freshly harvested hop cones, aromatic orange peel, caramelized grain and tropical fruit rises from the small, white head. The taste follows the olfactory first impression and inspires with a symphony of fresh citrus hops, spicy pine notes, light malt and pointed bitterness.
