Braggot is a drink from days gone by: centuries ago people drank the mixture of mead and beer. In principle, barley malt and honey are married together in the brewing process and result in a delightful drink that combines the soft sweetness of honey with the spicy tartness of the malted grain.
The Lithuanian brewery Sakiškių alus has recently added a Braggot to its range. Her variant complements malt and honey with aromatic sage and freshly harvested cherries. They take advantage of the characteristics of the style and use it as a lovely canvas on which to paint their own flavor explosion. The purple summer fruits give the beer a wonderful ruby red hue and the foam is also colored delicate pink. You can’t see the sage, but you can smell it all the more. When you open the can, a composition of cherry compote and dewy sage fills the air. The initial taste is honey-sweet and caresses the palate with soft notes of malt and the summery aroma of ripe cherries. The sage adds grassy hints and herbal notes, but is less dominant than the cherry. Enjoying the beer leads to a dry finish that, thanks to the sparkling carbonic acid, feels a bit like drinking fine champagne.
