The start of the Founders Brewing Company was known to be quite tumultuous: Dave and Mike brewed beer they thought people would like. In fact, nobody really liked it. The beers were not particularly exciting and the taste was rather unspectacular.
Head brewer Jeremy tells a story that wonderfully underscores the lack of character in the beers. A friend of the brewery was known for its annual birthday parties of epic proportions, and the Founders brewers wanted to join the party with a keg of free beer. The friend declined with thanks.
That wouldn’t happen nowadays. Mike and Dave have turned around and started brewing tasty, challenging and drinkable beers. Their standard line-up also includes the fine Centennial IPA: The cold-hopped India Pale Ale is stuffed to the brim with aroma-intensive hops and impresses with a successful balance of green gold and golden malt. The popular classic is presented in a warm copper tone in the glass and exudes a sensual scent of spicy pine resin, roasted grain and citrus-fresh hops from the small, slightly tinted head. The initial taste reveals a strong body with soft malt notes and a silky-soft mouthfeel. The hops contribute finely tart notes of tangy grapefruit and orange peel and provide the crunchy bitterness that skillfully rounds off the taste.
