The San Juan Islands are located in the Pacific Northwest off Washington State. The archipelago consists of a variety of small uninhabited and larger populated islands and is home to just over 15,000 people. Every year, the island area attracts countless visitors with its natural attractions: whales and dolphins can be seen from the coasts of the island, the clear water is ideal for swimming and canoeing, and the hilly landscape covered with dense forest is a paradise for hikers and cyclists. Again and again, however, the region is hit by forest fires, which envelop the entire archipelago in a mysterious fog.
Less menacing, but all the more delicious is the beer, named for the Haze over the San Juans. A collaboration between the breweries Naparbier and Outer Range Brewing Co., the brew is a powerful Imperial India Pale Ale with a rich visual haze and a delightful range of flavors.
The cloudy beer in bright straw yellow is adorned with a white foam crown and smells of light malt and tropical fruity hops as soon as you pour it. The attack reveals an amazingly light-footed body with juicy notes of pineapple, mango, citrus and papaya. The malt provides a smooth base while the hops add a subtle bitterness alongside the fruit explosion.
