Of the approximately 300 different hop varieties currently in circulation, the so-called C hops in particular have made a good name for themselves in craft brewing circles. These varieties are summarized under this term because their names begin with a C and many breweries prefer to use them for their creations. This category includes, for example, Citra, Centennial, Columbus, Chinook or Cascade. Each of these varieties is characterized by an individual taste profile that gives the beer its very own character. Citra is one of the most popular strains out there, due to its distinct citrus aroma. Although the plant only came onto the market in 2008, it has already become an all-time favorite. The green gold gives the brew juicy and sparkling notes of pink grapefruit, lime, freshly grated citrus zest and tropical fruit as well as a straightforward, powerful bitterness.
The Ukrainian brewery Ten Men is also a fan of this special hop variety. For their tasty New England IPA, the brewers have chosen Citra in the conventional and cryo versions.
The hops are first noticeable in the scent: A potpourri of golden mango, sun-ripened lemon, freshly mown grass and earthy hops fills the air and tempts you to drink. This follows on the foot and pleases with exotic fruits, citrus fruit, grassy hints and a stable bitterness.
