The barrel aging of a beer is a process that demands a lot from the brewers: First, a beer has to be brewed that is suitable for storage, sometimes for years, then the right barrels have to be found and finally the brewer has to show the patience of an angel until the good drop is ready. Choosing the right cask is just as important as the beer itself, after all it gives the drink intense flavors that should harmonize with its aroma. The choice is almost endless. There are red and white wine barrels, woods that previously stored schnapps, fine champagne or sparkling wine barrels and dozens of other options, each of which has its own aromas and nuances.
The brewers of the Norwegian brewery Nøgne Ø chose casks from the Arcus distillery to refine their strong Jonah’s Lift stout. The exquisite wood previously housed a whole range of the finest beverages: After the casks were used to store sherry, aquavit was produced in them and then they came into the hands of the brewers, who matured a tasty Imperial Rye Porter in them. At the end of this journey, the oak wood was bursting with intense flavor nuances and was ready for Nøgne Ø’s best creation yet. Jonah’s Lift is a luxurious beer specialty that enchants with its velvety texture and rich, dark aroma.
