The Hungarian brewery Horizont Budapest has launched a range of cask-aged beers alongside its core range. Under the name Night Shift, the brewers develop beers that are stored in former schnapps barrels after the brewing process is complete and are used to their full splendor. The refinement in the wooden barrel ensures intensification in various aspects: on the one hand, the taste changes and deepens and receives notes of vanilla, oak wood and the spirit previously stored in it from the aromatic barrel, the alcohol content also increases slightly and the beer becomes a voluminous, complex specialty.
The basis for the Imperial Pastry Stout, which is matured in rum barrels, is a beer that was brewed with an incredible 10 types of malt and then fermented for a long 8 weeks. In addition to the generous amount of different malts, chocolate, coffee, cinnamon and vanilla also found their way into the cauldron. After this lengthy and worthwhile process, the 12.0% strong drop was filled into freshly emptied rum barrels and the magic could begin.
The barrel aging turned the already multi-layered beer into a dark symphony of caramel, exotic vanilla, fine oak wood notes, delicately melting chocolate, winter spices, freshly brewed coffee and raisins preserved in strong rum. Horizon’s Night Shift Vintage 2021 Imperial Pastry Stout is a heavenly treat for all the senses!
