Pils is a Czech invention and yet it must be said that the Franconians have made this style of beer their own. Franconia is a melting pot of beer diversity and has been for thousands of years. So it’s no wonder that the Franconians put their very own stamp on the classic from our neighboring country.

One of our favorite Franconian pilsners comes from the Trunk brewery. The former monastery brewery is located directly behind the pilgrimage church of the Fourteen Saints near Bad Staffelstein and has a down-to-earth selection of real Franconians on offer. Their interpretation of a Pilsner is a classic version with a mild character, full-bodied aroma and great freshness.

The Franconian-Czech specialty is called Nothelfer Pils and looks in the glass just as you would imagine a picture book beer: A solid crown of blossom-white, dense-pored foam sits enthroned on a lustrous, crystal-clear golden body, small bubbles of tirelessly flowing carbon dioxide round it off successful optics. In the nose then a symphony of green grass, fragrant hay, gently roasted malt and sun-ripened grain. The initial taste refreshes body and soul with a sparkling mouthfeel, juicy citrus notes and a delicate bitterness. Gradually, strong notes of blossom honey, hay and straw join in and create a taste profile that will delight every Pilsner.
