If you want to become a master brewer, you first have to pass your journeyman’s exam. After you have gained two years of experience in a brewery, you can register for the master craftsman’s examination. Over the course of one to three years, skills are deepened, abilities are trained to perfection and further knowledge is imparted. The crowning glory of this time is the master’s examination, which usually consists of brewing a beer. The brew is then put through its paces and decides whether the candidate passes or not.

When brewer Lorenz successfully passed his master’s examination in 2015, his diligence, perseverance and dedication were rewarded with a place in the core range. Well, you can’t find Lorenz directly there, but his master brew. The brew for his test was a wonderful smoked beer, which has been an integral part of the range ever since.

Lorenz’ Meistersud flows into the glass in a copper-tinged amber-gold and has a dense-pored crown on the crystal-clear body. A fine note of smoked malt dominates the smell and taste of the beer. In the initial taste, caramel, honey, grass and citrus support the elegant smoky note. In contrast to Bamberg’s smoked beers, Lorenz’s version is quite mild: the smoke aroma hovers over what is happening like a tasteful veil and gives the beer delicate and pleasant hints of smoked malt.
