Before Nordeck near Stadtsteinach became a ruin, it was a castle. The building was built around the year 1100 and belonged to the Count of Henneberg. Several changes of ownership followed, and the castle was destroyed and rebuilt. It gained notoriety in connection with the robber baron Thomas von Abtsberg, who used the castle as a dungeon for his prisoners. According to legend, one of his hostages was able to escape: the son of a merchant joined forces with the robber baron’s cook and, with her help, freed himself from captivity. In the course of the Peasants’ War, the castle was almost completely destroyed. Today you can only look at the remaining residential tower.
