In Franconia, the Zwickel, often also spelled Zwickl, is an absolute classic: The strong cellar beer goes wonderfully with regional cuisine and complements roast meat, dumplings, savoy cabbage and snacks with a wonderfully fine seasoning and tasty variety of malt. The gusset used to be left to the brewer, but today we all benefit from it.

An extremely successful representative of its kind is the Zwickelbier from the Brauhaus am Kreuzberg. The cellar beer has an alcohol content of 4.9% and already makes a pretty good impression visually: the beer flows into the glass in a clear, shiny copper red and is adorned with a beautiful crown of white, creamy foam. A bouquet of mown, lush green grass, freshly baked bread, sun-ripened grain, spicy yeast and juicy oranges fills the air and makes you excited for the first sip. This reveals a decent body with a mild reaction. Full-bodied notes of stone oven bread, honey, grain, caramel and roasted hazelnuts represent the malt, while the hops contribute floral notes, tangy citrus notes, spicy herbs and a harmonious bitterness. Enjoying the beer leads to a crisp, bitter finish that leaves you thirsty for the next bottle.
